View Full Version : anybody know anything about hijack this logs?

I think I need to download and run hijack this
a year or so ago I was having all kinds of malware problems- wound up getting spybot search and destroy and adaware - I run both monthly.
my anti-virus is trend micro - and it catches spyware also.
but I'm having some weird random unexplainable problems - my inbox on mozilla thunderbird not loading quickly (I've compressed the folders more than once) and a few other annoying things.
I run CCleaner almost daily. I've defraged. Not sure what next....
does hijack this really help? and can any of you read the logfile and tell me what to delete (for real)?
thanks,
D

After a quick look thats all I see that really looks suspicious...you have a TON of other crap running that really doesn't need to be going - all the itunes, realplayer, etc type stuff. I'll wait on this and let GLS or dude parse through this as well. Later I may get a chance to look up the two things listed above.

how do I fix the TON of crap running - that doesn't need to be - is that in the startup menu?
I really appreciate the help

The alcx thing...has to do with his Realtek sound card.
I agree Hipster, it is clean...except for that one entry. His BHO's (browser helper objects) are clean, too. More crap than I like, but it is good crap....relatively speaking.
You do have a lot of process running unnecessarily (java updater, sonic updater, qttask, etc) that I would kill off. If your pc has only 256 MB of memory, you most certainly are feeling the pain.
Quick and dirty way to disable a bunch of this stuff, and see if it makes a difference. Go to Start-Run...and type msconfig.
There will be a startup tab. Uncheck the updater programs (sonic, etc) the messenger auto start, etc...and reboot. If something is not working as you like after a reboot, you can go back and put the check mark back, and all is well.
Right now, I am leaning towards a case of Windows "rot"....meaning after a while, every version of windows on the planet needs erased/reformatted and started over fresh.

thanks - a bunch
I'll go try to disable some stuff
problem with windows is - it was preloaded with the purchase and I don't have the disks - so what to do then?

Well let me see, in hijackthis, you can check stuff and it will remove it for you....a lot of this stuff is personal preference, but as an IT person, I'd rather have performance than eyecandy ....here are a few things you could easily check to remove:
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe - I think all this does is check for updates to quicktime, you can do this manually
C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe - I think this just tell messenger to start automatically with the computer - do you use it everytime you are on the computer? Chances are if you started it manually whenever you needed it instead of automatically, your computer would start up faster.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background - same as above
[TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot - same as qttask.exe except for realplayer
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe - same as above
Thats a few to start out with - but its hard to want to tell you much remotely since I can't fix stuff if I break it

You have an HP desktop....I believe you can press F10 at bootup, and it will take you to the HP recovery partition, where you can choose to repair your Windows install (keeping all files, data, etc intact) or do a complete reinstall (erasing everything and starting over)
As always, before performing anything such as this, you need to have your data you absolutely cannot live without (pictures, email, documents, etc) backed up elsewhere

yep, remove it...see what happens. I am guessing nothing
Before you reformat it tonight, simply disable the things Hipster and I talked of...play with it for a couple of days, to see if your performance picks up.

Also, in case you ever need it - while we can help you on here, I know there are a few sites out there that have forums dedicated only to parsing hijackthis logs and helping people clean stuff out...mostly you just have to look up process names one by one though and be careful what you delete!

Yeah if you ever have a question, usually if something running seems suspicious, you can google it and get a pretty good idea if it should be there or not....
